Yay, you are pregnant! However, the initial fairytale starts to dwindle when you start having the dreaded “morning sickness”. This is most prominent in your first and second trimester. For some moms, it can go on through the pregnancy. If you are experiencing it right now, I’m sorry and get how horrible this is for you. I had morning sickness, or rather all-day sickness! I had it through my first and second trimester. It was draining, uncomfortable and downright disgusting.
I could barely eat, but there are a few foods that can help ease your symptoms, and those were my lifesavers. I have listed the things that worked for me and might work for you too.
It’s important to drink a lot of water to replenish what you are losing. I had to have my water iced cold, but others say warm water helps. As long as you are keeping your body hydrated. If plain water makes you nauseous you can have;
2. Eat small frequent snacks
It’s important to eat smaller frequent snacks, and not large meals. Having an empty or full stomach can make your nausea worse, so you want to find a happy balance. You must keep your blood sugar balanced, sharp blood sugar fluctuations can be a nausea trigger. You can have foods like;
When I was pregnant I struggled to chew without gagging, so I would opt for smoothies. Use greek yogurt, almond milk, oat milk and some fruit. You can make a great tasting smoothie that’s easy to get down. If your body allows, you can sneak some greens in there as well.
4.Eat something before you get out of bed
Eat dry crackers first thing in the morning and throughout the day. I liked the water crackers from Woolworths. Do this before you even get out of bed. It helps with the wave of nausea you get when you wake up. You can also have some nuts or dry cereal.
5.Salty or sour foods
This can help when you can’t get that metallic taste out of your mouth and you need a pick me up. I ate anything I could find with these flavours;
There is no cure for morning sickness, but I hope these tips help alleviate your symptoms. Baby steps mom, you will get there, and soon this period will be over.
